Tooth-Colored Fillings
McKinney, Texas
When a tooth needs a filling, the restoration does not have to stand out.
At RoA Dental Studio, we use tooth-colored composite resin to repair cavities and selected areas of minor damage with a restoration designed to blend with nearby enamel. Each filling is shaped for the individual tooth and adjusted to fit your bite.
What Is a Tooth-Colored Filling?
Tooth-colored fillings, sometimes called composite or white fillings, are direct restorations made from composite resin. The material bonds to prepared tooth structure and comes in shades that can blend with surrounding enamel. Composite is commonly used to restore a cavity and may also be used for a small chip, worn edge, or other limited damage.
Early tooth decay can sometimes be managed without a filling, but once a cavity has formed, the decayed tissue usually needs to be removed and the tooth restored. A filling rebuilds the missing area, but it does not make the tooth immune to new decay, and no filling lasts forever. Regular evaluations help us monitor both the restoration and the tooth around it.
When Is a Tooth-Colored Filling the Right Choice?
Not every cavity or damaged tooth should be treated with a filling. We consider the size and location of the damage, how much healthy tooth remains, the forces on the tooth, and whether cracks are present. A larger or weakened tooth may need a crown or another type of restoration instead.
When composite is appropriate, it offers a natural tooth color, bonds to the tooth, and can be placed directly during the appointment. At RoA Dental Studio, we select the shade, rebuild the tooth's contours, and check how the filling meets the opposing and neighboring teeth. Longevity depends on the size and location of the restoration, bite forces, diet, home care, and habits such as clenching or grinding.
What Happens During Treatment?
After evaluating the tooth, we numb the area when needed. We remove the decayed tissue and any unsupported tooth structure, prepare the tooth for bonding, and place the composite resin. The material is hardened with a curing light. We then shape and polish the filling and adjust your bite as needed. Some temporary sensitivity to temperature or pressure can occur after treatment. Contact us if sensitivity is severe, gets worse, does not improve, or if your bite feels uneven.
Caring for Your Tooth-Colored Filling
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily. Limit frequent sugary or acidic snacks and drinks, and avoid chewing ice or other hard objects. If you clench or grind your teeth, tell us; a custom nightguard may be appropriate.
Keep the exam and professional hygiene schedule recommended for your oral health. During these visits, we check the filling, its edges, your bite, and the surrounding tooth. If a filling chips, feels loose, becomes painful, or your bite changes, contact us rather than waiting for your next visit.
